You and I, Some Irrational Love

I was watching My Girlfriend's Boyfriend when I rediscovered this song again. The song played while Jessie got married to Ethan, a writer she met at a cafe. She chose him over Troy, who co-owns a lucrative advertising company. Ethan takes her to parks while Troy takes her to fancy restaurants and exclusive romantic getaways. She was confused who to choose. Ethan is safe and fuzzy, the type you can easily cuddle to on a rainy afternoon while he reads you a book in a peaceful drone almost lulling you to sleep. Troy on the other hand is attractive, confident and driven but who feels like a continuation to nothing. He's right at the moment. He's seductive. You're drawn to him but you know at the back of your mind, this intense attraction will fizzle out to dying embers. He does not feel permanent, as of the moment. You are then tempted to risk it, to find if this could somehow last. Either Troy or Ethan? But like any other movie, heroine ends up with the safe guy, Ethan. But there is this twist at the end of the movie, that will surprise you though. Didn't see it coming too. So go check it out. 

But really, if hypothetically you were Jessie, who would you have chosen? I would've chosen Troy. I always take things rationally, weigh my options over and over again. I'm a confessed cynic and for once I'd love to try how it is to love feverishly and irrationally. Yes,  I might end up having my heart broken but it will surely be one for the books. At the very least, I have a story to tell to some random stranger at the bar or cafe.

To love because you just do. To love not because he or she has something for you or you to him or her. To love just because.. In this practical, materialistic world? I hardly hear someone do it anymore. 

So anyway, I gotta run. Meeting my best friend later for coffee before she leaves for Paris. I just bid farewell to one of my good friends a week ago, now, again for another. Ciao.

I Remember A Boy

Been listening to this woman on repeat. Her track, I Remember A Boy, is so poignant. It's best listened to on cold, rainy morning ride on the bus. 

I have this running theory of person's and their current favorite track. Always, it reflects how they feel at the moment, what they are going through or went through and how it often calls back memories. I listen to one song moment then suddenly I get a quick trip down memory lane. Sights blur, people around me are drowned out and I am in that moment again. 

Sentimental. A word I describe myself. I don't show it much but if you look and listen closely, stories I tell are laced with fondness. When I miss someone or something, I talk about it in a pretentiously passive manner  but the glint in my eyes betrays me. That is what I love about Shannon Labrie. She has this strong vocal presence and she draws me. She may still have to stay on my playlist for quite awhile (meaning, for weeks).

Zia Quizon: Dear Lonely

I rarely am a fan of local solo artists. Most of them are entertainers. You say, isn't it the whole point? To entertain? I say, no, it's making good music and less of hitting high notes and not constantly making versions after versions of popular songs. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the classic birits on TV but on my iPod. I want good music I can listen to on those long bus rides to work, walks and on lazy days idling in bed or by the window.

Then I discovered Zia online through her debut song, Ako Na Lang. Needless to say, I was immediately hooked. I like her. Her songs are very addictive. I have them played when I go for a shower, on my long walks to work and on bus rides home. She is a breath of fresh air in the local music scene. 

She can hold her own without her famous parents shadowing her career. 

May she continue to be true to her craft. I now have Zia in the short list of local artists I do follow and like so much (e.g. Up Dharma Down, PNE, Urbandub and Bamboo).

Banana Pancakes on Repeat

I found this song recently as it played randomly in my media player. Jack Johnson's Banana Pancakes is perfect for rainy days. I found myself playing it on repeat as I work in the office. It helps me relax.

When I hear the song, I think of home, of hot coffee or coco, of waffles, of endless time lazing on the couch by the window watching everything get drenched, of the lulling sound of the rain, of the cold, of children playing tag under the rain.. all these in a heady mix of nostalgia, longing and daydreaming. 

It makes me ignore the cynic in me and fearlessly embrace emotional vulnerability and nakedness to a faceless, nameless stranger I somehow wish and dread to meet one day and sing this lines to him unabashedly out of tune:

"When the world fits inside of your arms,

 Don't really need to pay attention the alarm

 Wake up slow, yeah, wake up slow"

Adele is a constant favorite. So is John Legend too. When I saw the video below of John Legend doing a cover of Adele's hit song from her 21 album, I just couldn't let it pass.

Fly, Esperanza

I get why she won a Grammy. Other nominees for Best New Artist included Justin Bieber, child singing sensation. Talent-wise, he's average compared to jazz singer-songwriter Esperanza Spalding. She's not entirely new, she's been around the business for 3 years and already has three albums. Such raw talent yet less known by many. Giving her the Grammy is well-deserved. Time for the world to get acquainted with Esperanza.

QUICK FACTS: She's 27 years old from Portland, Oregon. Jazz bassist, singer, and songrwiter. She's a self-taught musician raised by a single mother. She has three albums under her belt, with her 2010 Chamber Music Society gave her a nomination and apparently won the Grammy for Best New Artist. Her fourth album, Radio Music Society is currently on the works.

RIDICULOUS FACT: Bieber fans aka Beliebers/Biebs were so enraged at the teen's defeat to the extent that they hacked Spalding's Wikipedia page! They changer her biofact, putting Justin as her middle name and wrote that the singer should GO DIE IN A HOLE. Overzealous fans plus TEEN ANGST = BIEBS. Like seriously. Bieber should teach his fans how it is to be a good sport. Besides, have you seen her live performances? No commercialism, no over-the-top props and costume. Just her instrument, her band, her voice and her stage presence. That's it.

Now I may have faith, to make mountains fall

No AUTOTUNE. These days, that's rare. Bieber is not for all, especially if you're a teenager no more and JAZZ is too. Not for all. Notwithstanding, she is extremely talented and it shows undeniably. I like watching her live performances. How she's in the zone and genuinely in touch with her craft.

What The Hell?

Avril's back with a new album, Goodbye Lullaby. Her new single, What The Hell was premiered in a video showing her waking up in bed wearing a sexy black lingerie. 

Dear Avril,

I have been a fan since your Complicated debut. Your songs were fun, fierce and had substance. My best friend was so much into you everyday did not pass by without mentioning your name. You topped the charts, married Derek of Sum 41 and divorce him a short while. Needless to say, we kept track of your goings on because we just love how you are both fierce and sexy without having to don skin-baring ensembles. 

After a long hiatus, you make your comeback with What The Hell. Same old fun we knew. The video literally disappointing. I think its time for you to get over being eighteen. We enjoyed Sk8er Boi and Girlfriend but darling, you're much older now. Time to make more mature tracks. If you insist on fun, literal songs then don't feature it in a video full with obvious product placements. Watching you wake up in bed wearing a sexy lingerie won't push viewers to buy Abbey Dawn, Avril Perfume and Sony. Seriously! 

I hope the next track is way better and not have your fans exclaim, 'WHAT THE HELL?' in a negative way.

2ne1 equals a major splash of colors and addictive songs. Their latest album did not only have one but lots. Like this song for Yamaha Fiore's CF entitled, Don't Stop The Music. True to its title, I pressed play several times as I wrote my report due Monday.

Megan on Eminem's Love the Way You Lie

My lesbian crush Megan Fox stars in Eminem's Love The Way You Lie along with David Monaghan, Lost star. Have I ever seen her in music videos? I don't remember any that she has ever been in. Chances are, this could be her first. 

It won't be much of a surprise if Eminem took his inspiration from his infamous relationship with two time ex-wife Kim. He has written a lot of love and hate songs about her from his previous albums. He picked an artist who could very well relate to domestic violence as portrayed by Megan and David above. RIHANNA. uhuh. The singer stated this was something she just had to do. Of course, we all know the ugly details of her relationship with sadist boyfriend Chris Brown, right. 'nuff said.

Eminem: Won't Back Down Song Leak

'Guess who's back. Back again. Shady's back. TELL A FRIEND!' -Eminem, Slim Shady.

Takes a few listens to warm up to it. Initial reaction was, 'THIS SUCKS!' Pink in it doesn't help either. I think it's time for Eminem to branch out from the usual dissing-other-artists-is-how-i-make-money-and-calls-it-music stuff.

in need of cool breeze

The northern part of the country's suffering from Typhoon Kiko's wrath. He left several parts of the country in destruction. The heavy downpour coupled with angry winds destroyed livelihood, left families homeless and cold, drowned people, and had hundreds of passengers and motorists stranded on the road.

They're cold while we suffer here from the heat! Despite sitting here with electric fan positioned in a way that its breeze points directly at me, it did but little service in relieving the heat. I took a bath twice today. This too was fruitless. The water is lukewarm barely enough to cool my body. And as soon as I take one step out of the bathroom, I am welcomed with a hot breeze. I am already annoyed with the humidity. Annoyed at the lack of comfort I've had the whole day.

As I read today's news regarding the destruction the typhoon has caused and the families it left homeless and grieving for loved ones lost, I have been selfish. My complaints is nothing compared to their loss.

On a brighter, you just have to listen to this woman's music. She's a bit like Ingrid Michealson only a lighter version. Ingrid's more dreamy and surreal. Still she's got good music.

Doubts hovered around 2nE1's craft. Many were sure they couldn't make without BIG BANG by their side and that their fame will suffer a sudden death.

With two eye-catching videos? I don't think so. This could be my new ear candy for awhile.

Relapse: Eminem's Comeback Album

Eminem's back with his old tricks! My ears are twitching to enjoy his songs once again. These days all I listen to is jazzy blues. The timing's just great. My OJT starts tomorrow. Dunno what to expect but I'm pretty sure of one thing: lots and lots of paper works. What more can an accounting student contribute aside from making coffee? Yey. At least I can enjoy his songs on those dragging moments.

So anyway. His video?? Gosh! Sooo funny! He bashed and MOCKED a lot of celebs!!! No wonder there were a lot of negative reviews from critics. One even called him VILE.

Bitten By the LOVEBUG

My friends can point at me and gloat with their 'I told you so's' as I officially admit on liking one Jonas Brothers song, LOVEBUG. Bitten and hooked..to the SONG, mind you. Not the band.

I was immediately rendered helpless as I listened to the song on the radio. I was entranced. To my delight MTV featured the video and in a mixture of disbelief and amazement, my mouth fell open as I saw the JB gracing the video (WTH?!) wearing what could be vintage clothes. And yes, it looked good on them. And no, I did not giggle or squeal. As I have pointed out, only the SONG mattered.

Mitch Hansen Band..thanks for TWILIGHT HOUR

So, I'm back for almost a month of hiatus. Pardon my lazy days of posting things on my blog. It's just that the school stress is getting to me you know. Junior year ain't a joke anymore.

The thing is, yesterday, as I was reviewing my notes for our pol sci exam (yey!!! I'm overjoyed. NO pol sci prof to go to class to!!!) my block mate sent an sms. She was a fellow Twilight series fan so I guess there's no use saying what it was all about. BUT, I INSIST on you knowing.. EDWARD's Lullaby! Right, in the book, it was purely instrumental BUT THANK GOD ALMIGHTY, someone thought of actually composing a song not just with Edward's Lullaby but a whole lot more. And the pure genius behind it? *drum rolls* the Mitch Hansen Band!!! Omg. Their album, Twilight Hour, contains 13 songs (correct me if I'm wrong) inspired by Twilight books. Gosh. I mushed and allowed myself to go overboard with the soppiness. LOL. The nostalgia overwhelmed me that I felt the strong urge to read all four books all over again. Darn! I totally forgot. Mia borrowed all my books (well, Twilight and New Moon actually. I stiil have to buy Eclipse and Breaking Dawn). To divert my attention and stop all the book flashbacks, I had to watch 'Death Race' to get it out of my system. Haha. Vampires can be addicting you know.

I can't be too selfish not to share my new obsession. Listen to the songs on my playlist. Of course, my personal favorites are 'Lullaby', 'The Last Thing', 'Stay With Me' and 'A World Without You' (not in the playlist tsk tsk). Lullaby is of course inspired by Edward's lullaby for Bella and 'Last Thing' is from the third book; about how Edward felt when Bella finally said yes. I know, I know. It even surprises me that I can get this CHEESY. lol. To all Twilight fans there, go on and go all mushy!!!

Charice Pempengco, Hitting the High Notes with Celine Dion

"She has a voice that can literally blow the roof off the Madison Garden." - Celine Dion on Charice

The last time I heard, she was singing for the World Cup. One lucky girl!!! The world cup, imagine? She'll have the chance of meeting and rubbing elbows with hot football stars like Beckham. Now, she did a duet with Celine Dion. Not only that, Celine honored her with a lengthy introduction. At Oprah's request and Celine's curiosity over Charice's noted talent, she decided to have her as a guest to her concert in Madison Square last Monday, September 15, 2008. For a matter of seven long minutes, she marveled at her remarkable voice and recounted Charice's struggle in joining various contests to get noticed. In turn, Charice received thunderous applause from the audience before, during and after her performance. Keeping at par with Celine with all the high notes must have been an ear feast to the audience especially to her mother and our fellow men who must have been brimming with pride while she sang onstage. In the videos I have attached, you'll see what I mean.

You say she got lucky? Perhaps. However, as they say, it's not just luck, mate. It's a combination of talent, hardwork, faith and right timing. Take note. In a big show here in the Philippines, she only ranked third. You wonder why how such remarkable talent received such undeserving honor? Well, she got beaten up with text votes and superficial qualities like her not-so pretty face. It's a good thing she remained faithful to what she can do. Look where she's at now. Charice is enjoying this overwhelming publicity (not just locally but internationally) more than her fellow contestants from the said show. Way more than the declared champion, I tell you.

Here's to Charice!! She kind of rubbed off on me. Never used to like her much.
